SAMRA
ŠABANOVIĆ
The title is borrowed from Ivo Andric's novel where he describes how an artist is considered suspicious by society. I was interested in the still existing reactions to the presence of a camera in ordinary situations that make me equally exposed when having a camera in my hands.
In these photomontages, the passerby is captured by a camera exactly when they are returning the gaze back at it.
Is the photographer's presence causing discomfort? Or is the camera suspicious? The photographer is still seen. The World sees itself looking. The World is becoming ever more photographed but also we are becoming ever more surveilled.
